Blind Corner Sauvignon Blanc 2010
As the Blind Corner website suggests, this is not your ordinary Sauvignon Blanc. A portion of the grapes were air-dried, then violently assaulted in barrel by winemaker Ben Gould. The rest of grapes were also wild fermented in oak and lees-stirred for three months.
The wine certainly shows this treatment. There’s funky kiwifruit, lime candy and grassy aromas, and a savoury, textural palate with minimal fruit emphasis. A bit of lemon and lime juice acid sneaks down the side and the wine finishes with a cheeky tannic rub. It’s a versatile food wine for Asian cuisine. I’d suggest salt and pepper squid or lemongrass chicken.
If you’re a fan of Marlborough SBs, you probably won’t dig this wine. But if you’re seeking something with character, this is your Gordon Ramsay or Anthony Bourdain as opposed to your Marlborough Ainslie Harriott or Jamie Oliver.
