Punt Road Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
We don’t get a lot of Yarra Cabernet ‘round these here parts. Punt Road also make some delicious cider under the Napoleone label. They’re refreshing and fruity but don’t come across as being mass produced nor made in a laundry sink/bathtub in the shed. Just that little bit of edge which I enjoy. They also don’t use unbalanced sweetness to sucker you in.
Anyway, back to the Cabernet. An array of aromas– some varietal and others not typically so, but complimentary. Bay leaf, cherry, licorice and a character that phases between blackcurrant and cassis liqueur. There’s a touch of raw meat contrasting some fresh mint and spice, which reminds me of making lamb koftas. A vibrance of fruit launches the palate, which sheds after swallowing to unveil a noble carpet of tannins. I think the wine will benefit from another 6-12 months or a good decant to shake off excess fruit.
A cool little Cabernet which, like the Napoleone Ciders, is chic, tidy and perfumed but ain’t afraid of breaking a nail.
