‘Melva’ by KT & The Falcon Riesling 2010

February 11, 2012

500

Gloriously colourful label that really stands out on the shelf. A fitting precursor to the treat the wine gives.

Wild fermented and from the Melva vineyard in Watervale, Clare Valley.

It’s Riesling, but forget about plain old lime and slate. An abundance of aromas to be found – nashi pear, apple juice, garden flowers, bath salts. Lime and even some grapey characters on the palate (actually unusual for most wine, apart from Muscat). There’s some pear skin phenolic action from skin contact and the wine is supercharged by spine-tingling acidity. Hard to judge the residual sugar since the wine is so well in balance, but I would imagine it’s about 5 g/L (dry without the grimace). If you could manage to hold on to some for 5 years, it would be really interesting to see how it develops.

It’s a real showstopper. Great on its own, but probably quite versatile with food. After tasting this and the Plantagenet Wild Riesling 2010, I’m convinced that we need to see more Australian Riesling with wild fermentation and skin contact.

Excellent.

Agreed. Great wine. Need to have this next to the ’10 Vinteloper Odeon for shits and giggles and fun and such.
